It is not necessary to travel far to find children in need. They are often in our own neighborhoods. The Town of Amherst Warm Clothing Project for Children in Need program has been operating for 29 years. Last year they provided 294 local children with appropriate winter clothing. School social workers, counselors, teachers and nurses refer those receiving items.
How can you help?
- Contact Mrs. Kathy Mobarak-Miller by November 10
Town of Amherst Youth & Rec. Dept. 631-7132 ext. 7523 or email kmobmiller@amherst.ny.us - You will receive information on a child in need: gender, size and needs (most needs are winter jackets, school clothes, pajamas and winter boots)
- Return items by December 1 to:
Town of Amherst Youth & Rec. Dept.
1615 Amherst Manor Drive (2nd floor)
Williamsville 14221
If you wish to include additional items for the child/youth such as a book or toy, be assured that the child will receive the additional items.
If you are unable to shop, you can still help by sending a contribution; a group of volunteers will do the shopping. (Checks made to NPC should have Warm Clothing Project in the note line.)
Know that you are helping your neighbor and it will be greatly appreciated by the children, their families and the schools.
I am looking for children’s clothing for free for two children of a single mother who lives in Buffalo, NY. Even shopping consignment stores throughout the area are too expensive on a single parent’s income.
She has one boy who is 10 who wears sizes 14-16 and his sister wears sizes between 14-18. They are not eligible to receive winter clothing from Coats for Kids or other such program give-aways because she makes just enough not to be eligible for welfare, but her rent amounts to half of her salary and there is little left to be able to buy clothes for 2 children and feed them. In order to be eligible for many programs like Coats for Kids, you must show that you are receiving money from Social Services.
She is a very hard worker and could very well use some help.
To give you an example of her expenses, her two children go to Buffalo School 81 and at the beginning of their school year, their teachers sent out a school supply list for the upcoming school year. Adding the total costs from both of the children’s teachers list of school supplies came to $500. My husband and I are the great-grandparents of these two children and even we could in no way, on a fixed income, afford to pay that much for school supplies. I swear to you that $500 was the total amount!!
Lorraine,
We do not have a clothing ministry at North Presbyterian Church. However, I have another place you could try.
If you don’t mind a little drive to the country, Alden Presbyterian Church has a store (Neat Repeats) where all manner of clothing for children and adults of all ages and sizes may be had for free. A free will donation is welcome but not required. Shop for what you need. No questions asked.
The address is 13298 Broadway in Alden (on the corner of Crittenden Road, at the traffic signal). They are open every Wednesday 9-11 am, 1st Saturday of the month 9-12, and every 3rd Friday 6-8 pm.
Good luck to you and your family.
