Turkey Basket Ministry

Turkey Basket Community Project-2022

After a weekend of extreme weather, school closings, travel bans and advisories, and delayed deliveries, the turkey basket team pulled off a spectacular display of teamwork, creativity, and perseverance!

Wolter’s Bakery donated 4 times their typical baked good donation on Friday afternoon.  Sorting and partial meal assembly happened on Friday.  After the last of the special order of dry goods from Aldi and 20, 50 lb. bags of potatoes arrived at the church, meal assembly was completed on Sunday afternoon.

Tim Hutton picked up the last of the turkeys from Sloan market early Monday morning and agencies began stopping by to pick up their orders.  This year’s distribution of 474 meals went as follows:

  • Buffalo City Mission – 40
  • Vive LaCasa – 30
  • First Presbyterian Church – 5
  • Citizens Community Development Corp. – 40
  • Community Action Organization/Head Start – 35
  • Women’s Respite Program – 10
  • Hispanics United of Buffalo – 95
  • St. Lawrence Church – 100
  • Catholic Charities – 60
  • City of Buffalo Senior Services – 50
  • Heim Middle School Social Worker – 4
  • Temple Beth Zion – 2
  • North Presbyterian Church – 3

In addition, the surplus canned and dry goods were given to the University Presbyterian Church Food Pantry.

Many thanks to Julia and Chris Cohan (Congregation Shir Shalom) and Tim and Debbie Hutton (North Presbyterian Church) for their efforts in coordinating the work that needed to be done in a very fluid situation.  A big Thank You! also to the many volunteers–Williamsville East HS students, Northtowns Youth Group, Congregation Shir Shalom and North Presbyterian Church members and friends, and members of the community–who braved the weather and showed up when they were needed to make this year’s turkey meal distribution a success.

Thank you to everyone in our congregation and community for your outpouring of support!
