Mary Lou George
Director of Pastoral Care

mlgeorge@firstchurchbuffalo.org

Mary Lou George is the Director of Pastoral Care and is an ordained Deacon and lay person with unique skills to serve our congregation.  She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with a Masters of Social Work degree from Syracuse University.  Brought up as the daughter of the organist in the United Church of Fayetteville, New York (a Presbyterian/Baptist collaboration!), her work for more than 30 years was in the field of mental health and psychotherapy.  In recent years, she has trained as a Stephen leader, completed Clinical Pastoral Education at Sisters' Hospital, served as a chaplain for HIV/AIDS patients at ECMC, worked as a pastoral associate at AIDS Family Services, and served as a consultant to First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo and the Presbytery of Western New York.
At North Church, Mary Lou provides pastoral care and counseling for the congregation, coordinates and supervises our Stephen Ministry, serves as resource staff to the Board of Deacons and the pastoral care team, and supervises and supports our Parish Nurse, Pat Mohr.  In addition, she attends weekly staff meeting and serves as a supportive colleague in ministry to the pastor and multidisciplinary staff.  She works to share news of her ministry through regular written contributions to the North Star, educational presentations and workshops, and occasional involvement in the Sunday morning worship service.
Family is a major focus in Mary Lou's life with her husband, Anselm, and with their three adult children located around the United States and in-laws in Germany; travel is a wonderful retreat for them!
